The town of Matlock - Derbyshire was once a spa town. When therapeutic springs were discovered in 1698, the town started to grow. Through the 1800s, twenty hydropathic establishments were built. These have all since closed.
The town which is situated directly in the middle of London and Manchester is home to Matlock Cable Tramway, built in 1893. The town of Matlock is emerging as an up and coming destination for music and the arts. Since 2004, the area has been home to Matlock Live!-a performing arts festival that showcases local talent in music, dance and art. The festival has increased in size and popularity each year, drawing large crowds from near and far.
The Youth Hostels Association has their national headquarters in Matlock. Despite this fact, both youth hostels that existed at one time in the town are now closed due to restructuring.
There are three museums in Matlock-Crich Tramway Village which is an historic village and tramway museum; Peak District Mining Museum where guests are welcome to have a real life mining experience if they so desire and the National Tramway Museum focusing on the National Tramway.

The River Derwent area has recently been renovated and is fresh and exciting for the youth of the area as well as visitors. There is a modern skate park for the kids to enjoy and hone in on their skills as well as boating areas and playgrounds all connected by walk paths.
