Town information- The Georgian market town of Ashbourne - Derbyshire also known as The Gateway to Dove dale,lies nestled in the east midlands region of England in the sovereign state of the United Kingdom. The area has an estimated population of 7112 inhabitants. Ashbourne is located smack in the middle of Derby, Sudbury, Uttoxeter, Stoke-on-Trent, Leek, Buxton, Glossop, Fenny Bently, Hartington, Tissington, Matlock, Matlock Bath and Belper.
History- First reference to the town is made pre 7th century in the Domesday Book, under the medieval name of Esseburn. Originally a meeting point for six main coaching routes which includes Manchester and London. The area grew from strength to strength to the commercial centre for a substantial number of surrounding villages.
Shopping- Thursdays and Saturdays are market days in the town. A vast variety of fresh produce and home-made products are available to feast on and invest in, even the fussiest food connoisseur will have an endless list of delicacies true to the region to pick and choose from.
Events- If you are a fan of soccer, the thousand year old, Royal Shrovetide Football Match held annually, is an absolute must-attend. The whole town is divided into two teams namely Up'ards and Down'ards, who plays against one-another for two days. A hand-painted ball containing cork is used to score goals in opposing nets located three-miles apart. A game with few rules and tons of fun. The Ashbourne arts festival celebrates it's 10th anniversary this year with a 2 week long exhibition of both local and international artists and performers during the months of June and July. The annual Ashbourne Agricultural Show is held during in August with entertainment for young and old, with lots of animal shows, horticulture and handcraft competitions as well as delectable food stalls.
