Getting Rid of Dad's Boredom By Finding the Right Assisted Living Facility - Home - Landscaping

If there is any state of being that my dad absolutely can not stand, it is boredom. All other emotions are perfectly acceptable, but not boredom. The man was always active. Growing up in my family, we did not just watch TV. Dad had to constantly talk about what was happening on the screen. I missed a lot of TV shows as a child because my dad was talking about them rather than watching them. Even if he was just reading the morning paper, Dad had to talk about the news. It did not seem to bother him that we had no idea what he was talking about as we had not read the paper.

That's what made me so sad after my dad had his hip replacement. He was bored. The only time he got out of the house was for physical therapy sessions. The doctor said the therapy would never be able to give him back his full mobility, not at his age and in his health. As cliche as it sounds, my dad really did become one of those old people who sit around all day blankly watching reruns of Matlock and Wheel of Fortune. He was bored. Things might have been different it was football season, but it was spring. I could not stand to see my dad bored.

I had to work so I could not be there all the time to talk to him, not that he wanted to talk to me at that point. With his hip being the way it was, he needed help with little things like putting his pants on too. I hated to do it, but I decided that I needed to find an assisted living facility for my dad. I just hoped that I could find one where he wasn't bored all the time.

I toured what seemed like hundreds of facilities. The residents in most seemed either as bored as my dad or way too active for him. Sure, before his hip replacement, he might have loved an independent living facility that was full of other seniors taking dance classes and going on long walks, but that would not work now. Even though I told my them about my dad's situation, so many facilities insisted on telling me how active all of their residents were.

Finally, after a long search -- it seemed endless -- I found an assisted living facility that got my dad's unique situation. Sure, they showed me lots of seniors dancing and bowling and doing all sorts of other extremely active things. It was also an independent living facility so that was to be expected. However, they also took the time to show me their assisted living residents who were in similar situations as my dad's. What really got me was the movie screening room where a group of residents were watching some old John Wayne film and talking about it just like my dad used to do. They even let me talk to the assisted living and the independent living residents to see how they liked the place. Turns out they all loved it.

Now, I just had to convince my dad to go into a retirement home. As you might expect, he resisted and threw a fit. I think I heard him say, "No, retirement home" at least one hundred times in the space of two weeks. I'm not sure how I did it, maybe it was the nagging, but I finally got him to just go with me to visit the place. He started the visit in a bad mood and was predictably determined to hate the place. Then, something happened. The same group of residents that I had seen in the movie room, whisked my dad away from me and the tour guide.

To this day, I do not know what those residents said to my dad or what they all did. All that I know is dad returned a couple of hours later and said, "I'm staying." Of course, it was not that easy and it took a couple of weeks to get everything arranged for dad to move in. But once he did, that assisted living facility became his new home and I got my old dad back. He wasn't bored any more.

Mark Hopwood, Managing Director of First Great Western, which runs services on the route, said:

"First Great Western really values the excellent work that is done by theCommunity Rail Partnerships in our region, helping to boost passenger numbers to record breaking levels and increasing the value of our local lines to the communities that they serve. Eric Egar, Chair of the Heart of Wessex Community Rail Partnership said:

The Peak District National Park - Family

The Peak District National Park consists of 550 square miles in central and northern England. Parts of the park encompass Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Cheshire, Greater Manchester and South and West Yorkshire. About 38,000 people have homes within the boundaries of the park. Most of these are in non industrial villages and small towns, however one third of the city of Sheffield lies within the park. Those sections of western Sheffield that are part of the park are mainly residential. Sheffield residents can be in the park in a matter of minutes, and many have great views of it from their homes.

Much of the area of the Peak District National Park is uplands, however there aren't many real peaks, mainly rounded hilltops with some grit stone edges, particularly in the northern most areas of the park. Most of the population live towards the southern end of the park. Many of the people, fortunate enough to live in the park work there as well. Tourism is the number one industry within the park and just under a quarter of the residents are employed in tourism jobs. Manufacturing and rock quarrying combine to provide about 31% of the jobs. The Cement Works at Hope is the largest employer in the park, and some other minor industry jobs such as bottling mineral water, a cutlery factory, and a brake lining producer can be found within the park. For the most part the boundaries were drawn to keep industry out of the park.

The limestone that is quarried in the park is vital for roads and cement in the area. Shale and gritstone for construction are also quarried. Lead isn't economically feasible to mine any more, but fluorspar, barites and calcite are still extracted from the park. The northern part of the park is known as Dark Peak and the gritstone and shale support moorland and blanket bog environments. Sheep pastureland and grouse hunting are the most common land uses to the north. The South is White Peak, and has more agricultural uses and contains the bulk of the park's residents. The White Peak has pasture land more suited to dairy operations.

Touring the park can be done in a number of different ways. The Peak District National Park is said to have the best public transportation system for touring in the national park system. The Peak Rail Society was formed by railway enthusiasts in 1975 to reestablish the rail line from Matlock to Buxton through the park. The project has been going on over 30 years, and the Matlock to Darley Dale line opened in 1991. To the north, passenger service resumed in 1997 with the Rowsley depot seeing its first passengers. Steam and diesel locomotives drive tours through time, as passengers are transported back to the heyday of railroads. There are many speciality journeys available.

Another great way to see the park is by renting a bicycle. There are several places within the park where you can do this. Most are in the villages and towns in the park. If you plan to ride slowly and take in all the sites, hotels, hostels, bed and breakfast, and cottage rentals are available in many locations and price ranges.

On the fourth Tuesday of each month you can hop on the 7:14 Folk Train at Dore, Grindleford, Hathersage, Bamford, or Hope. The Folk Train takes you on a musical trip through the Peak District countryside while musicians aboard the train perform an informal session. Food is available, and all in all this is a nice scenic tour with a short stop at an area inn before returning in the evening. The Edale Rambler Folk Train from Sheffield has been in operation for about five years.

If you prefer a more up close and personal experience with nature in the park, ranger guided walking tours may be for you. These hikes are led by knowledgeable rangers and most have a theme. Civil War: Battlefields and Bloodshed will have you walking across a Civil War battlefield and visiting a murder scene of a prominent local royalist. The subject matter will include the impact of the Civil War on life in the 17th century in the Peak District. The Fungus Foray sounds disgusting, but is merely an educational look at identifying fungi that grows in various areas of the park, and viewing autumn colors. The Peak District National Park is a geologist's dream. Slightly porous and soluble limestone allows water to carve caves and caverns deep in the ground. Hiking and caving are very popular activities in the park along with rock climbing on the many rock formations. Some of the caves have been found to contain stone tools, and the skeletal remains of now extinct animals.

If rock climbing is not adventurous enough for you and you would like something a little more extreme, hang-gliding and para-gliding may be your cup of tea. Some areas of the park are ideally suited to these aviation activities because of they catch the wind from all directions, and have the required updrafts. To fly in the park the Civil Aviation Authority requires any hang-glider or para-glider pilot to join an association that they oversee. This is to make sure the proper training has been provided before leaving the ground.

The park has been a popular location for movies. Haddon Hall in Derbyshire was recently transformed from a Medieval and Tudor manor house, into Thornfield, Rochester's house for the recently aired BBC production of Jane Eyre. Haddon Hall, with the help of special effects and sophisticated pyrotechnics burned to the ground for the purposes of the movie. So realistic was the fire, that many locals called the fire brigade. They eventually had to park fire trucks outside the set to comfort the locals. Pride and Prejudice, The Dam Busters and several other films have been shot in Peak District National Park.

Famous Fictional Lawyers in Books, Movies, and Television - Legal Professionals in the Media - Law

Movies, books, and television are filled with wonderful and hilarious depictions of different professions, and that is particularly true of the legal profession. While what follows is nowhere near a complete list, the following are some particularly memorable depictions of lawyers in entertainment.

Perry Mason

From the mind of the prolific author Erle Stanley Gardner (himself a lawyer) came one of the most famous attorneys in any medium: Perry Mason. Those not familiar with the numerous novels and short stories featuring Perry mason (or the radio program that featured the seminal super lawyer) are probably aware of Perry Mason thanks to the television show starring Raymond Burr (or at least the Ozzy Osbourne song named after the attorney).

Atticus Finch

For those who never read Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "To Kill a Mockingbird," you're likely aware of Atticus Finch thanks to Gregory Peck's Academy Award-winning portrayal of Atticus Finch in the film adaptation of the novel. Maybe the epitome of moral rightness literature, Atticus Finch stands miles above many other characters. Battling against intolerance and racism while trying to raise his two children alone, there is something wonderful about the way Atticus carries himself. He is a role model, to say the least--like Superman but without the superpowers or the costume.

Matlock

A folksy fellow, a lover of hot dogs, a punchline on "The Simpsons," and a staple of syndicated television, you can always turn to Matlock if you're looking for a legal professional with a down-home flavor. The character was portrayed by the great Andy Griffith, who eventually let the show come to an end after 195 episodes on NBC and ABC.

Dan Fielding

We've covered the almost unbeatable, the moral, and the downright folksy, so now it's time to look at the lecherous. One of the most memorable characters of the sitcom "Night Court" was Dan Fielding, played by John Larroquette. When not coming on to his colleague, Christine Sullivan (played by Markie Post), Dan Fielding was hitting on anything that moves. Larroquette's work on the show earned him four Emmys.

Famous Fictional Lawyers - Legal Representation in Pop Culture and the Media - Law

From sublime to hilarious, fictional lawyers have entertained millions of people through books, televisions series and movies. From principled to bumbling to devious, these figures have left lasting impressions.

Atticus Finch, from Harper Lee's novel "To Kill A Mockingbird", and played by Gregory Peck in the film adaptation, is perhaps considered the most ethical and honorable lawyer of all time. Atticus fights for acquittal of a black man convicted of raping a white woman. Despite rampant slander and abuse against himself and his family, Atticus remains strong and committed in his support of the black man.

Perry Mason, created by Erle Stanley Gardner, was pivotal in more than 80 novels, a radio series, TV movies and a successful television series. Perry, a defense lawyer, usually accepted murder cases that seemed hopeless and somehow managed to get his client released at pre-trial hearings with unusual methods that were technically legal, with some help from his private investigator, Paul Drake, and secretary, Della Street.

Matlock, played by Andy Griffith, was a gruff small town attorney. He won nearly every case he had and, by the end of each episode, he would prove his client innocent and expose the real culprit. Matlock was an eccentric in many ways, which gave the long-running television series a comic aspect.

Vinny Gambini, a character played by Joe Pesci in the move "My Cousin Vinny" was the ultimately inept lawyer. He wrote the bar examination six times before he passed. The 1992 comedy film centers on Vinny's hilarious attempt to have his cousin and his cousin's friend acquitted of murder. "My Cousin Vinny" is considered one of the greatest legal movies made.

Dan Fielding, played by John Laroquette, was one of the quirky characters in the television situation comedy "Night Court". Dan Fielding was the prosecutor in a Manhattan night court whose main objective in life was to have sex. He would go to any lengths to accomplish his ambitions. The Dangerous Roads of Derbyshire - Autos

It's fair to say that while England's roads aren't as dangerous as some roads in other countries, it's still important to take care when carrying out delivery work in the United Kingdom; particularly if you find that your current day's deliveries are taking you to the county of Derbyshire where the majority of all the UKs fatal traffic accidents are said to take place. So if your delivery work route contains any of these three dangerous roads, then you may want to look to your GPS for an alternative route, so that you can avoid Britain's worst roads:

A5012 Pikehall to Matlock

The A5012 in Derbyshire stretches 9 miles between Pikehall to Matlock and, according to EuroRap, is ranked as the third worst road in Britain. The eastern part of the road is named the Via Gellia Valley and is commonly used to transport goods from the nearby quarries and stone works. This means that the road can get both stony and wet and is often slippery. This, coupled with the many sharp bends, narrowness of the carriageway and recently imposed 40mph speed limit makes it a road to avoid while carrying out delivery work.

A54 Congleton to Buxton

The A54 linking Congleton to Buxton is the second most dangerous road in Britain and between 2003 and 2005 was responsible for 18 fatal accidents. 26% of all accidents on this road are at junctions so take extra care when using one on this route. Most hauliers will recommend bypassing this stretch of road altogether and taking the A537 and A556, both of which are much quieter roads between the two destinations. Like the A5012, the A54 may be dangerous, but it is also a very scenic road. Many drivers refer to it as the River Dane road as when you carry out your delivery work on this stretch you'll be following the road of the River Dane.

A537 Macclesfield to Buxton

As mentioned above, the A537 is often used as an alternative route to the dangerous Macclesfield to Buxton route. However, this route may be quieter but it is still as dangerous and its large number of accidents means that it is classed by EuroRap as the most dangerous road in the whole of England. The worst part of the road is the second leg between Macclesfield and Burbage. When carrying out your delivery work try to make sure that you're aware of the multitude of sharp corners that this road contains. These sharp corners have made the road extremely popular with bikers. Motorcyclists are responsible for a large proportion of accidents and, as a consequence, the road has a 50mph speed limit enforced. The A537 also contains the highest pub in England, The Cat and the Fiddle, where you can stop for hot food and beverages and look at the Cat.cam to see what the traffic's like for your return journey.

Although the three worst roads in Britain are all located in Derbyshire, you'd be surprised to hear that on average it is Scotland that has the highest risk highways. However, EuroRap hopes that by making drivers aware of dangerous roads before they reach them, more accidents can potentially be avoided.

Gard Changed His Driver to R11 - Sports - Golf

Case Gard is the only golfer from the fourth Florida Southern golfer to shoot 7-under par lower in the 31-year history of the Matlock Collegiate Classic.

Gard changed his driver to taylormade r11 driver instead of his taylormade r9 driver used before. He said this r11 driver increases his distance off the tee dramatically. "I've gained 20 yards with my driver, and it's still as accurate as before.'' Gard's recent great performance made Florida Southern's spring season brighter.

Gard has proven his mettle on the course at his 21 years old ever since he was a junior golfer. Gard claimed three titles at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College after winning the Junior Citrus Open at Cleveland Heights, and then transferred to FSC for the fall season.

"Case has come a long way from his first tournament to where he is right now with his mental game,'' Gordin said." He's getting a lot more mentally tough. When I first got him, he made some bad decisions out there, and of course I corrected him, much to his dismay.''

In addition to the r11 driver, Gard also replaced his putter with TaylorMade Ghost Spider putter. This putter helps Gard out his whole game, and helped with his three-putt stats. The two new clubs helped Gard a lot. The putter has shaved one to two shots a round off his scores while r11 driver increases his distance significantly.

Gard opened the Matlock with a 5-under 67, adding rounds of 70-72 to lead the Mocs to a runner-up finish. "It's definitely a high. I hope to win a few more if I can,'' said Gard, a George Jenkins graduate who was named Sunshine State Conference Men's Golfer of the Week. "We're better right now than in the fall,'' Gordin said." Hopefully we peak at the regional and the national tournament. It is a process. It's encouraging.''

At the age of 23, Scott won the 2004 Players Championship and two years later the Tour Championship. He was on the move, but his game wasn't showing up at the majors. In the year of 2011, Scott had only four top-10s in 39 majors. He had five other top 10s last year, including a win at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in August.

At Augusta, where he finished in a tie for second, Scott held the lead late on Sunday, but his 5-under 67 wasn't enough to hold off Charl Schwartzel, who had four closing birdies to win by two shots.

From swing instructor to caddie, Scott Titleist Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport 2 Putter has seemingly followed in Tiger's footsteps. Now he's taken up Tiger's habit of not playing very much golf, building his schedule around the majors and a few select other events, including the World Golf Championships.

On Thursday, his 6-under par 66 in the first round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship was only his sixth round of year. "I'm trying to keep myself fresh and have myself ready, also at the same time for the biggest events of the year," said Scott, "And that certainly starts here, I believe, until the end of September.

Holiday Magic - Society - Women's Issues

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, how often do you actually see people doing that these days? As a matter of fact, I have never in my lifetime seen anyone roasting chestnuts. I was born in an era where technology was just beginning to make headway into our lives. The world of black and white television began to show up in every home and constantly, new inventions were being discovered. Because of all this new technology, it seemed as though womens lives were going to become much easier than in the past. Unfortunately, I really dont think that is what has happened. Increased technology, Womens Rights, single-parent families and the growing need to have a two-income family has all but pampered us women. Life in the fast lane in this high-technology world as we know it, seems to have put us in a daily whirlwind and the necessity to keep up with children and meeting their needs is also a never ending daily demand.

Wouldnt it be wonderful if you could rekindle fond holiday memories from your childhood? Also, if you had an awful childhood, maybe you might want to rekindle the warm holiday memories as shown through the television families we grew up with? As you may or may not know, in the 50s there was the Cleaver Family from Leave it to Beaver, the Ricardos from I Love Lucy and also that wonderful family from Father Knows Best. In the 60s there were the families from The Andy Griffith Show, Mary Tyler Moore and Dick Van Dyke. In the 70s th ere was a boom of new television families that pushed their way into American lives which many times gave women the feeling that they were not doing enough for their own families. The children who watched these shows began believing that there may be something wrong in their own homes and that their families were not normal. This began a new generation of children who lived vicariously through the lives of the children they viewed on television each week. Unfortunately, it was apparent that there was a lot of discontentment in the lives of the American population. The family television shows like The Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family, The Jeffersons, The Little House on the Prairie and Happy Days; brought you that feel-good happy family feeling each and every week. Oh, and the Holiday episodes!. Did people really get through the Holiday Season with such ease? Television families seemed to make Thanksgiving and Christmas look so easy, and well, so charming. Whatever ideas wer e formed in our minds as young girls, we took those ideals and grew up with them. Those feelings of inadequacy seem to have increased with our added responsibilities. Then the age of technology hit! For those of you who grew up in the 80s and 90s, your life had already been subjected to the whirlwind of technology, right from birth.

So, what does it take to get back to the basics? Regardless of which era you grew up in, here are a few suggestions as to how you might reduce any self-doubting or negative feelings that you may develop toward yourself during this holiday season. First of all, GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK! You need to take the time to really appreciate yourself for the wonderful person that you truly are. Whether you are married, you have kids or you are single and trying to keep up with your career, you need to take a much-needed break each and every day. Doesnt it seem that as soon as Halloween is over, BOOM! its Thanksgiving, and then Christmas is right around the corner? Then you realize that you dont have your holiday shopping done, you have no idea what gifts to buy, and then out of nowhere you are overwhelmed!! Again, I tell you, take that much needed break. Even if you have to take 30 minutes each day for yourself to get back to the basics of life, I promise you, it can help. Here are a f ew suggestions that you can incorporate into your daily life to bring back the Holiday Magic from your youth.

1. Take 30 minutes, stop at a coffee shop and buy yourself a holiday beverage. You know, the kind with cinnamon and whipped cream? How about a hot apple cider? Spend that time reading short, heart-warming holiday stories that rekindle fond memories. Several womens magazines contain this type of stories starting in October. If reading short stories doesn't do it for you, how about reading one of your favorite holiday childrens books such as Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman or The Night Before Christmas? You would be amazed at how taking just 30 minutes a day to reflect on pleasant and warm memories of days gone by, can bring you back to a place of contentment and relaxation.

2. After a long, hard day, and after meeting the demands of your family, take a nice long bath or shower using scents that bring back fond holiday memories. Some suggestions would be vanilla sugar, vanilla bean, brown sugar and fig, peppermint, sugar and spice, cinnamon and spice. Many body and bath stores have several holiday scents to choose from. After showering or bathing with your favorite holiday scent, drench yourself in a matching lotion or body butter to keep those scents lingering throughout the night.

3. Teas. There are so many wonderful aromatic teas to choose from! When you are finally alone, or in the company of your mate, make yourself a cup of hot decaffeinated tea and just relax! Take 30 minutes on the nights that you choose, and in a relaxed state of mind, create your holiday plan. Make a list of every thing you need to have accomplished each week, until each holiday arrives. If you can stick to the plan, thats great! If you cant, that is okay too. Just re-evaluate as needed to be sure that you know what still needs to be done, and prioritize if necessary. Even if you are not able to stay on track, just knowing ahead of time what needs to be done, you are less likely to be overwhelmed by all the details.

You are a very special woman and it is necessary that you take time for yourself each and every day. You deserve to be pampered, even if you have to take the initiative and do it for yourself. You cannot sit back and wait for someone else to make you feel good. Take the responsibility for your own happiness this holiday season and bring back the Holiday Magic from your youth just 30 minutes or more each day, and you will be amazed at how differently you look at the upcoming hustle and bustle of the holidays.

Oklahoma Watches Its Biggest Stars in HD - Technology

When Americans think of Oklahoma, Hollywood glamour isn't what generally comes to mind. People think of wide expanses of grass swaying in the wind, of bluegrass music and the Dust Bowl. But considering its physical isolation and its relatively small population - about 3.6 million people, making it the 28th most populous in the country - the state has produced a number of notable movie and television stars (in addition to some of the U.S.'s best country music, although that might seem a bit more predictable). You don't need obscure satellite TV channels to catch these actors and actresses - you can probably catch them in HD with nothing but standard antennae! Here's a list of Oklahoma's finest.1. Ron HowardThis meek-looking redhead first made it big as on the Andy Griffith Show and Happy Days, using his sweet Midwestern charm to endear himself to viewers. Watching syndicated reruns, it's hard to believe that he would go own to become one of Hollywood's most successful directors, churning out megahits like Apollo 13, Cocoon, and A Beautiful Mind, but that he did. Oklahomans can watch their native son's movies in HD on just about every film channel satellite TV has to offer!2. Reba McEntireMcEntire originally made it as a country singer, producing more than 20 #1 hits and becoming a legend in the industry. But this firey redhead had a personality to match her powerful voice, and eventually forayed into acting. In 2001, she took a turn as Annie Oakley in the critically-acclaimed Broadway musical Annie Get Your Gun. She also went on to star in the 6-season television sitcom Reba, in which she played a single mother whose teenage daughter becomes pregnant. Though the show was canceled in 2007, you can easily watch it in HD as its popularity has caused it to be sindicated around the country.3. Chuck NorrisWhat's with Oklahoma and redheads? Hard to say, but red hair is about the only thing Norris shares in common with Howard. While Howard is winning Oscars, Norris is kicking butt with his white boy karate moves, alongside Bruce Lee in popular movies like Way of the Dragon or in the long-running CBS hit series Walker, Texas Ranger. Norris has developed such a huge (quasi-ironic?) cult following that entire websites are dedicated to Chuck Norris jokes. (To wit: "Chuck Norris doesn't breathe. He holds air hostage" and "Chuck Norris' tears cure cancer. Too bad he has never cried. Ever.")4. Dr. Phil McGrawThis mustached TV psychologist originally entered the University of Tulsa on a football scholarship. But after an injury put him out of commission, he turned to psychology and never looked back, eventually becoming one of Oprah's favorite guest stars. This catapulted him into his own television talk show show, in which he plays the compassionate but tough-loving patriarch to fame hungry wannabe reality stars. And despite his burly physique, McGraw has managed to add a weight loss book to his growing media empire (perhaps Dr. Phil is only fit to give advice on such a matter in a country as overweight as the U.S.).

Watch all your favorite stars on cable TV. You can easily find the best cable tv prices in Okahoma City right here.

Really How Old Are You? Seriously? - Family - Seniors

Some people claim there is a scientific way to establish how old you "really" are. To provide this service they ask you questions about how often you have sex, drink alcoholic beverages, ride a bicycle or go for a walk. They're also likely to inquire about your relatives, how frequently you read and whether you still eat red meat. From all of this they claim to determine whether you are actually younger or older than your birth date indicates. Unfortunately they don't look at the most reliable factors, like how loudly you groan when getting out of the recliner or how many reruns of The Andy Griffith Show you know by heart or whether you believe a rocking chair to be exercise equipment.

But the real honest to goodness truth is you can pretty much tell what age group you're in by the television commercials you watch. When is the last time you saw an ad for Chuck E' Cheese? Trust me when I say that if you see Betty White or James Garner hawking a product you are not watching Music Television (MTV). Advertising is not what it used to be. They don't just put up ads and hope the right folks see them. They know whose watching what. That's a little scary isn't it?

In doing research for this article (don't laugh) I switched to a program called "Jackass." If you haven't heard about this program, let me briefly explain it is about people doing incredibly stupid things. Things like trying to jump over a car traveling 30 miles per hour and headed right toward you. In your wildest teenage stupid period you wouldn't have been able to dream up these stunts. I'm betting Robert Wagner is not extolling the virtues of a reverse mortgage on this show.

What did surprise me, however, was an advertisement by a major insurance company which we'll call All City. Why would an insurance company advertise on a program where gross stupidity is celebrated? Not only would I not want my insurance company insuring the show's participants, I wouldn't even want them insuring anybody who watches. Sure we've all done stupid things, but we mostly thought they seemed like a good idea at the time.

If you see two or more advertisements for Viagra and related products during any one television episode, the show you are watching has been designated for the more mature audience. Speaking of Viagra, do you think it ironic they now come in soft tablets? Have you ever noticed how happy the actors pushing dentures always seem to be? I don't know about you, but the idea of keeping my teeth in a glass overnight doesn't make me smile. Oops, that's not a mental picture I wanted.

Speaking of happy, I also can't help but comment on the fact that all those women wearing Depends seem pretty darn pleased with themselves. Again, not something to wish for, but better safe than sorry I suppose. Whatever you are watching when you see these ads, it's clear the advertisers are not assuming you will be returning to college for another year.

Lately I seem to catch the aforementioned Robert Wagner bragging on the merits of a "Reverse Mortgage" with great frequency. Just another way to spend the kids' inheritance I guess. An old southern comedian (Brother Dave Garner) said they ought to have insurance that pays you now, and your kids have to pay it back. He thought maybe you would have a very quiet funeral.

So switch off the news or oldies and see what the younger folks are watching and note when diapers are advertised there's generally a child crawling around. The best advice about aging that I've ever seen goes something like, "Do as much as you can as long as you can." So get out there and do something.

Andy Griffith New Spokesman For Medicare And Health Care Law

Andy Griffith New Spokesman for Medicare and Health Care Law His face fills the screen as the subtitle reads: An important message from Medicare and Andy Griffith. Actor Andy Griffith has a new role as spokesman for President Barack Obama's health care law in a cable television ad paid for by Medicare. The veteran actor just may be starring in the role of his life. The promo is part of a Medicare campaign to educate senior citizens about the new benefits of the health care law which will be made available next year, indicates Alan Weinstock, insurance broker at Ad Focused on Outreach to Seniors not Politics The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) explains that the national ad is not meant to be political. It is part of its outreach to educate seniors about the new Medicare benefits that will be available next year. The 84-year-old Griffith tells seniors about preventive check-ups and lower-cost prescriptions for Medicare recipients, some of the benefits of Obama's health care overhaul, which seeks to expand coverage for the uninsured. The current plan is to run the ad on channels that seniors typically watch, such as the Weather Channel, CNN, Hallmark and Lifetime. The initial cost: $700,000. Polls show that seniors are more skeptical of the health care law than are younger people. A large part of health care reform is aimed at expanding coverage for the uninsured. And Medicare cuts provide much of the financing. That could be a problem for Democrats in the fall congressional elections. google_ad_client = "pub-2311940475806896"; /* 300x250, created 1/6/11 */ google_ad_slot = "0098904308"; google_ad_width = 300; google_ad_height = 250; Seniors have been known to vote in large numbers. Medicare Resources for Seniors who Still Have Questions Seniors need to educate themselves on what health care reform really means to them, suggests Weinstock. This includes reading the new Medicare and the New Health Law - What it Means to You. However, if you still have questions, you may want to reach out to service organizations for assistance. There are counselors who are available through your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). For California seniors they can be found through the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP), a volunteer program that provides free, unbiased Medicare counseling and information. And for Medicare beneficiaries who are considering Medigap insurance to help supplement their Medicare coverage, speaking to a reliable insurance broker like the brokers at can be very helpful. Its a website that offers you the opportunity to compare rates, plans and benefits from several prominent insurance companies.
