Weekend Getaways to California With Non Disney Vacation Related Activities

Even in Southern California the phrase "family vacations" does not have to signal a need to search out information about Disney vacations. Children young and old can enjoy spots beyond the boundaries of Disneyland. In fact you will find a rich place of mystery and magic just waiting to be found. There are lots of parks in southern California-Knotts Berry Farm, Legoland, Magic Mountain and others. Yet some of the most appealing spots do not place vacationers anywhere near a park. For example, parents might want to think about taking their children to Culver City, "The Heart of Screenland."A number of film classics were created in the studios of Culver City. The small "munchkins" in The Wizard of Oz stayed at the Culver Hotel during the filming of that movie. Later, various spots in that town provided the backdrop for certain scenes in Gone with the Wind.During a walking tour of Culver's small area one can get to the site where cameras were rolling during the making of that fabled film. Those cameras captured the scenes that showed Scarlet and Brett fleeing a flame filled Atlanta.A number of Laurel and Hardy films were shot in this small L.A. suburb. Later, when televisions began to appear in every home, the outdoor regions in Culver City provided the backdrop for the opening segments of several programs. During the opening of the Andy Griffith Show, T.V. viewers saw Andy and his son fishing at what appeared to be a pond or lake. Actually, they were placing their pole like props in the waters of Ball oona Creek. This is a body of water that runs through a long stretch of Culver's inspirational surroundings.
