Discover Captivating Caves During Breaks in the Peak District

Choosing to stay in UK holiday cottages rather than jetting off overseas is a great way to explore the amazing natural scenery you can discover closer to home. When it comes to impressive landscapes, the Peak District is certainly one of the best places you can go.Situated in central and northern England, the Peak District is widely considered to be one of the UK's most scenic destinations - as well as being home to stunning caves and caverns.By staying in holiday cottages here, you can explore all you want above and below ground in this incredible region. The local caves are a particularly impressive sight and the destination is in fact home to the UK's highest cave - Titan Cave - which stretches up 141.5 metres. A relatively recent discovery, it was stumbled across by pot holers in 2000.To see the region's stunning caves you need not actually embark on a caving adventure - although this certainly is a possibility! Activity centres across the Peak District offer guided caving daytrips for beginners.Accompanied by a qualified instructor, you could explore the incredible sights of the vast caverns and learn the basics of caving at the same time. Your activity centre will make sure you have all you need for the trip - just make sure you bring along some warm clothes! However, if you'd rather not be quite so daring you can simply visit some of the equally impressive show caves. Two that may particularly be of interest are the Treak Cliff Cavern and the Blue John Cavern. This is because these are the only locations where the Blue John Stone can now be found - a distinctive mineral that is used in jewellery and decorative items.Situated in Castleton, these caverns are amazing sights and during your exploration you can also learn about the history of mining in the area. And if you'd like to find out a little more, you can head to Matlock Bath to visit the Peak District Mining Museum.Back above ground, there are plenty of equally spectacular sights f or you to enjoy - and there are many ways to do so.The terrain here lends itself to all sorts of outdoor pursuits, such as walking, hiking and cycling - and you'll find there are numerous trails to follow along the way.Whatever you choose to do during your break in the Peak District, make sure you visit the incredible caves before heading home.
